Welcome
An Art Deco Vase; a Moroccan pottery platter; an old alarm clock. What do these things have in common?
They are all objects that carry memories from earlier times, from family and the wider culture. Objects that somehow speak to us of relationships, events, fashions, joys, and tragedies. Objects that carry narratives that might die with us if not recorded.
Writing about these objects carries a particular joy for me in my later years. It is a great pleasure to allow my fingers on the keyboard to record memories that are in some ways occluded by the passing of time. And I have been delighted that they seem to strike a chord with readers, are appreciated; and that several people have adopted the form for their own writing.
I hope readers may like to offer contributions to Objects&Lives, broadly following the format I have developed: posts of prose, poems, and artwork, each piece describing an object, its history, its associations with family and friends they might also relate to political, social, intellectual, and artistic commitments in the author’s life. Posts should include one or more photographs or other images, be elegantly written, and relatively short (prose max 750 words).
Enjoy, and allow these short posts to stimulate your own memories!
